Theodore Géricault (1791-1824).

Born in Rouen the 26.09.1791 died in 33 years in Paris in 1824 Theodore Géricault is pupil of the painter of horses Carle Vernet and the traditional painters Guerin and David. But it prefers the work of Large to them. Its short career is characterized by its intensity and its eclecticism.

Impassioned painter it is quickly in rupture with the traditional school. He obtains a great success with the show of 1812 with his officer of hunter with horse, success which is not renewed 2 years later with the wounded cuirassier.

In 1814 it binds friendship with the young person Eugene Delacroix who will continue the pictorial designs of Géricault. Because of personal problems, the artist crosses a phase of depression which it will never leave completely. In 1816 it leaves for Rome where it copies and studies Antiquity, Raphaël and Michel-Angel. It also is interested in Caravage, in Poussin, Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck. Of return in Paris it adopts a step documentalist inspired by the topicality, he visits the patients, the hospitals, the mortuaries, he carries at his place members or human heads to paint them with putrefaction.

He paints the Raft of the Jellyfish in 1818-1819, his key dense and thick with the violent and deaf colors, its impetuous compositions with the service of black and new topics cause passions.

Disappointed by the little of success which its work meets it leaves 2 years to England. There it meets Constable from of which enthusiasm given birth to in him a new dash (Derby of Epsom 1821). 
It represents other horse-races by using various techniques.

On its return in Paris of the portraits of lunatics constitute his last phase of creation.

It dies of an osseous disease following a fall of horse in 1824.
