Thomas Gainsborough (1727- 1788).

Thomas Gainsborough is with Sir Joshua Reynolds one of the English great painters of his time. Its work associates the influences of the Dutch painting of the XVIIème century (painting of kind and landscape) of the elements of French painting (Antoine Watteau) English elegance.

Its portraits are very influenced by Antoine Van Dyck.

In general it prefers the effects produced by the cold colors (Blue Boy 1770) Its significant pictorial design and naturalist gives to his fabrics a particular character. Its landscapes reveal a realism little known hitherto. In its youth Gainsborough learns art from engraving in London near the French draughtsman and engraver François Gravelot itself former pupil of the painter François Boucher, which explains the French influence in the work of Gainsborough. In 1744 in its own workshop it copies and restores works of Dutch Masters.

About 1746 it composes its first significant landscapes. It very quickly becomes one of the most snuffed landscape designers D ' England. However it is thanks to successes of its portraits that it settles in London with all its family. He becomes even official portraitist of the royal family in 1780 and in 1784 he can give up his station with Beautiful Arts and work independently.

Gainsborough prefers all the same the painting of landscape and in many portraits the subjects are represented within natural frameworks.
