Education. Louis Comfort Tiffany. Stained glass. (1890).

Here the central panel of the stained glass of Education at the University of Yale in the Linsly-Chittenden Hall. Tiffany carries out an allegory which includes Science, on the left, personified by the angels of the devotion, work, of the truth, in top, of research and the intuition in bottom, then the religion personified by the purity, the faith, and the hope, in top the veneration and the inspiration in bottom. The name of the angels is on their halos. The central figure represents the angel of the light, the love and the life. Work includes 3 panels on the whole, on the left a panel for Art, on the right a panel for the Music (see the similar button). Work is accompanied by a bronze plate which declares that the stained glass had been commissioned to commemorate the daughter of the donor, Simeon Baldwin Chittenden, with the intent of illustrating the biblical quote, " Through wisdom is a house builded, and by understanding it is established, and by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches ".

The glance of the spectator concentrates first of all on the central figure which is clearest, then it explores the 2 sides. 

The prospect is central. The angel light love life is located at the geometrical center of the stained glass and its body is prolonged by flowers in the foreground. 

The composition is rigorous. The rule of the thirds is complied with. 1/3 of pictorial space for science, 1/3 for the central figure and flowers, 1/3 for the religion. 

On the left, side science, the 5 angels look at downwards. On the right, with dimensions religion, 4 angels look to the top, only the veneration looks at downwards by humility. The central figure also looks at towards the sky and seems to challenge it. 

Details : 

Clothing of the inspiration radiates with a multitude the blue ones, turquoise blue to the indigo.

On the wings, glass was split and worked so that its texture resembles that of a feather.

The hand of the intuition shows a detail of nature to research.

With the manner of the English romantic painters of the time, the pre-Raphaelites, the women's faces are of a great beauty and idealized.

Light : It seems that the scene is lit by the top, with the vertical, this gives a little fantastic and solemn dimension to the stained glass. 

Colors : Contrast between hot and cold, complementary colors.
